  • Labis District Council (MDL) was established on 1st September 1979 under section 3 Local Government Act 1976 – Act 171.
  • The establishment was published on 9th October 1980 through JPU 26 Volume 24 No. 21 as follows :-
    • Land size as shown through Gazette Plan (PW) 1265 the size of 47.26 square miles equivalent to 122.4 square kilometers or 12,240 hectares.
    • The date of usage for the Local Government Act 1976 – Act 171 is simultaneous with the MDSS establishment date which is on 1st September 1979.
    • Usage of this Act is in-line with the requirement of section 2 (1) of similar Act which is published on 30th August 1979 through Government Gazette JPU 68.
    • The MDL establishment launch ceremony is conducted by the representative of the YAB Johor Minister on 29th December 1976 located in Jubli Intan Hall Segamat.

Early history of MDL establishment consist of 5 Local Councils

  • Bekok
  • Chaah
  • Sungai Karas
  • Ayer Panas
  • Labis
  • These Local Councils are united on 1st January 1977 under section 10 Local Government Act (Temporary Allocations) 1973 – Act 124.
  • The consolidation or formation is gazette through Government Gazette JPU 23 and JPU 24.
  • A Managerial Board was appointed to administer all Local Councils which have been united.
  • Consolidation of these Local Councils is known as a single name, which is Labis District Council.
  • The consolidation which has already been done is in terms of administration only. It is managed by a Managerial Board. Gazettes under section 3 Local Government Act 1976 has allowed MDL to unify all its areas physically, which is by taking into account a ½ mile area (40 chains) or 0.8 km of the left right of the main road as MDL, as shown through Gazette Plan 1265.

At the same time, MDL has widen its size by adding two more areas which is Tenang Station and Sawah Padi to form 7 total areas:-

  • Bekok
  • Chaah
  • Sungai Karas
  • Ayer Panas
  • Labis
  • Tenang Station
  • Sawah Padi

The consolidation which has already been done is in terms of administration only. It is managed by a Managerial Board. Gazettes under section 3 Local Government Act 1976 has allowed MDL to unify all its areas physically, which is by taking into account a ½ mile area (40 chains) or 0.8 km of the left right of the main road as MDL, as shown through Gazette Plan 1265.
